Red Acetate
 
Most species of ant cannot see red spectrum light, this means light that is red actually looks nice and dark for your colony. Placing this over the top of the nest or wrapping it around a test tube means that you can still see your queen but she will feel safe and secure without disturbence.
 
The exception to this is Messor Species, known species of Barbarus and Aciculatus can seemingly see red light and behave the same as in daylight when this is on.
