All you actually need when purchasing a small colony is a place for them to explore and be fed without disturbing their test tube. The Byd Bach does exactly that. It provides a miniture outworld where your pets can explore and get food.
 
Typically your test tube will last to around 60+ workers (depending on species), at this point you can connect the Byd Bach to a bigger nest and the test tube port becomes redundant and can be used for round the clock access to a water tube.
