Myrmicaria Brunnea

Myrmicaria Brunnea

intermediate

An absolutely wonderful and unusual species of ant that many will have never seen or kept. But with the correct conditions Brunnea will never fail to surprise you and gain interest in your collection.

Being such a distinctive shape, much like the hunchback, we assure you there is nothing wrong with them as they curve their abdomens underneath their thorax and stand very still. Often this happens while they understand the threats around them and to be ready with their chemical weapon. They can squirt acid in defence and aggressive tactics to subdue prey.

They grow impressive colonies and in the wild they prefer soil. Often they favour pasture, mountainous regions and gardens. The reason for all of these is the common denominator, flowers.

They love to visit flowers and consume the sap like secretions and nectar on them to gain sugars for the colony. This in turn makes them one of the key pollinators for wild flowers but working like an aphid cutting out the middle man the flowers can sometimes be damaged by their actions too.

They will be easy to keep for an intermediate keeper who can sustain 23 to 25 degrees and a 60-70% humidity. They consume prey readily and providing you can ventilate the outworld the chemicals will not be a major issue.

They are a tropical species and do not require hibernation.
